ZEVA FAQ

Scientific scalp & hair regrowth answers

The most common hair loss in men is the genetic condition called androgenic alopecia that can start as early as early 20s. It is becoming more common in young people now because of diet, stress, medications and excessive use of styling products e.g. perms and dye. The most common causes for Female hair loss are hormonal imbalances, anemia, diet, stress and aging.

As trichologist Dr David Kingsley says, “In almost all cases (hair loss), you can get improvement, even if it’s just stopping hair loss… And about 80% of the time, regrowth is a possibility.” With the rapid advancement in technology, there are now more safe and effective treatment options to minimize hair loss and boost hair growth e.g. supplements, scalp and hair treatments, LLLT, laser therapy, micro-needling, mesotherapy, some FDA approved treatments and Regenera Activa. Hair transplants are another option if you your hair loss is concentrated in specific areas.

The average person loses between 40-120 strands a day. Know your normal amount of hair loss a day and use it as a base line to detect any abnormal hair loss. If you normally lose 40 strands a day and you are suddenly shedding more, you might be starting to have hair loss problems. Also, you can do a pull test. By pulling about 50 strands, you should notice less than 10 strands coming off. Anything more than that may indicate a hair loss problem. These two simple home care methods can tell early signs of hair loss before you see any thinning at your parting or crown or any receding hairline.

Hair loss is commonly caused by genetics (androgenetic alopecia), stress (telogen effluvium), illness (thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases), and nutritional deficiencies (iron, protein, vitamins). By age 50, 50% of men and 40% of women experience pattern hair loss. Addressing underlying health and lifestyle factors is crucial for prevention and treatment

Dead skin, sweat, oil, dirt and chemical irritation can clog hair follicles. If untreated, these can lead to inflammation and infection causing folliculitis. Folliculitis can be treated with medications, antibacterial topical products and for stubborn cases laser treatments. If left untreated, folliculitis can lead to permanent damage of the follicles resulting in scarring hair loss.

Most shampoos do not directly cause hair loss, but frequent use of those containing harsh sulfates can strip the scalp of natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and increased breakage, particularly for sensitive or chemically treated hair. Opting for gentle, sulfate-free formulas helps maintain scalp health and hair strength. Additionally, avoid overwashing, as it can disrupt the scalp’s natural balance. Look for shampoos with nourishing ingredients to promote healthy hair growth and minimize the risk of scalp issues.

Early prevention is crucial, especially with genetic predisposition. Prioritize scalp health by using gentle shampoos, avoiding harsh chemicals, and incorporating topical treatments like scalp serums. Nutrition matters - ensure a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, zinc, and vitamins D and B. Lifestyle choices such as managing stress, avoiding smoking, and limiting heat styling protect hair follicles.

Male pattern baldness features a receding hairline and crown thinning, often leading to total baldness. Female baldness presents as diffuse thinning and a widening part, with the frontal hairline usually preserved. Genetics and hormones play key roles, and total baldness is rare in women

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition that appears as round or patchy bald spots on the scalp. Its exact causes are complex, but heredity, stress, and chemical or physical irritation can all play a role in triggering it. Often, if the underlying trigger is addressed, hair regrowth occurs naturally. However, in certain cases, alopecia areata can lead to or coexist with androgenic alopecia, resulting in more persistent hair loss. Professional evaluation is recommended for proper management.

Topical products like minoxidil, caffeine shampoos, and serums with biotin or niacinamide are clinically proven to stimulate hair regrowth. Professional treatments include peptide-based serums, growth factors, and cutting-edge exosome therapy, which promote follicle regeneration and hair density. Research shows that combining these with microneedling can further enhance results. Always consult a dermatologist for the most effective, personalized regimen.

To relieve an itchy scalp, use medicated shampoos containing ingredients like ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, or selenium sulfide. If itching is severe or persistent, it’s important to consult a dermatologist or trichologist to check for underlying conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, or fungal infections. A severely itchy scalp may signal a medical issue and could require prescription treatments or medications for effective relief. Always seek professional advice if symptoms do not improve.

Dandruff is mainly caused by the Malassezia fungus, seborrheic dermatitis, or dry scalp. Effective treatments include medicated shampoos with ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, or salicylic acid. Tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar rinses can also help reduce flaking and soothe the scalp.

A healthy scalp is the foundation for strong, vibrant hair. Key signs include a high hair count with minimal visible scalp, thick individual strands, and a low percentage of empty follicles. The scalp should be clean, balanced—not too oily or dry—and free from flakes, redness, or irritation. Good hydration, a balanced pH, and strong blood circulation are crucial for optimal follicle function and hair growth. Additionally, a healthy scalp is free from persistent conditions like dandruff or eczema and does not exhibit tenderness or discomfort. Regular assessments ensure early detection and management of potential scalp or hair concerns.

You may need a hair spa when you notice early signs of scalp discomfort, such as tightness, itchiness, flakes, or changes in hair texture. These symptoms often appear before visible thinning or hair loss, making early care essential. A hair spa is also beneficial if you want to maintain a healthy scalp, prevent potential issues, or simply enjoy a relaxing, restorative experience. If you’re experiencing hair loss or are looking for a personalized wellness plan, a professional hair spa can assess your scalp’s unique needs and recommend targeted treatments to restore balance and promote long-term scalp health.
